Our story.
A small studio on the Black River — built around big game, big country, and a respect for the trophies that come through the door.
A place built for the wild.
Black River Taxidermy is located in Rochester, Washington, twenty minutes south of Olympia. On its quiet setting near the banks of the Black River, our taxidermy operation focuses on big and small game mounts and European skull work.
The studio was designed to be an experience in itself — a space that shows the beauty of our loved wild places and the animals we pursue, while maintaining the functionality and safe storage of your trophies through the work.
Joel Swecker — owner & operator.
I'm a lifelong resident of Rochester, Washington, where I live with my wife and two children. An avid hunter from my youth, outdoor writer, and career firefighter, taxidermy captured my attention at a young age.
In 2012 I began an apprenticeship under a local taxidermist, followed by attendance at the Montana School of Taxidermy in early 2015. Black River Taxidermy was officially opened in May of 2015.
The most important areas of my life are my family and faith. A secondary focus is conservation and fighting for hunter rights — I'm one of the founding members of the Conservation Coalition of Washington.
Your trophy, treated like our own.
My reputation, work ethic, and quality of work are very important to me. I will always treat each and every trophy that comes through our doors as my own.
Having been a taxidermy client myself years ago, I understand the frustrations and hesitations that can come with the process. I've always strived to be at our best with communication and transparency around the completion of your mounts.
Let us help you preserve your memorable hunt, a distinct trophy, or a hard-earned experience into a lasting piece of art you will display proudly.
